Are quality speaker cables & interconnects worth it?

Ah, the eternal debate about speaker cables and interconnects! Some say they make a difference in sound quality, while others think it’s all just snake oil. I’m more of the type of girl who tries to balance price vs sound quality improvements. Aside from a Cambridge Audio interconnect I’ve owned since the 90’s, I make my own.

Psst Mogami W3104 12AWG 4 Conductor Speaker Cable is your friend if you want to make high quality speaker cables and interconnects. I get mine at Redco. I should have probably linked to very expensive cables, but for me I just cannot justify paying over $1000 for cables. I do believe the quality of cables makes a difference especially when it comes to shielding. However:

Let’s start with a joke: What’s the difference between a cheap speaker cable and an expensive one? About $1000. Ba-dum-tss.

Here’s the skinny when it comes to speaker cables & interconnects

Now, on to the serious business. The idea behind using high-end cables is that they can better transmit the audio signal without distortion or loss of information. After all, what’s the point of investing in a top-of-the-line audio system if the signal that’s reaching your ears is compromised by inferior cables?

Of course, skeptics argue that the difference in sound quality between cheap and expensive cables is negligible or nonexistent. They might say that a $10 cable is just as good as a $1000 one, and that any perceived improvement in sound is just a placebo effect.

But let’s face it, we’re not just buying cables for their sound quality, we’re buying them for their bling factor too! A sleek, well-made cable can elevate your audio setup to a whole new level of sophistication. It’s like adding a beautiful piece of jewelry to an outfit. It may not make a practical difference, but it certainly makes a statement.

And let’s not forget the practical side of things. Good quality cables are less prone to interference and signal degradation. This is particularly important when it comes to interconnects, which carry low-level signals between components. Using a cheap, poorly shielded interconnect can result in unwanted noise, hum, and buzz.

So, to sum up: are expensive speaker cables and interconnects worth the investment? The answer is…it depends. If you’re on a tight budget and your current cables are getting the job done, then there’s no need to rush out and buy a set of $1000 cables. But if you’re a serious audiophile who wants the best possible sound and aesthetic, then investing in high-quality cables can make a difference.

And let’s not forget the most important factor of all: personal preference. At the end of the day, what sounds good to one person may not sound good to another. If you’re curious about the difference that cables can make, try swapping out your current cables for a set of high-quality ones and see if you notice a difference. Who knows, you might just discover a whole new level of audio bliss.
